Flipmod 1
Foshan,China

Flipmod is a modular shading system designed for overlooked public spaces in subtropical cities, operating as a climate-responsive micro-infrastructure through lightweight intervention.
Implemented in two sites in Foshan — a residential riverside and a primary school entrance — the project adapts a single structural system to different spatial conditions. The structure consists of prefabricated bolted steel frames for efficient transport and rapid assembly. A manually operated system of winches, steel cables, and pulleys allows the roof to shift freely between multiple angles in response to changing sunlight.
At the riverside, the roof transforms from an overhead canopy into a vertical screen that blocks low-angle western sun, while at the school entrance it forms a more compact and dynamic configuration. Polycarbonate panels combined with woven material create layered light effects, and adjustable seating elements shift between table and bench modes, enhancing flexibility and interaction.
As a modular, reusable, and user-operated system, Flipmod not only provides shade and places to stay, but also invites participation through its transformable mechanism, allowing public space to be continuously redefined over time and climate conditions.
